Alexander Chernin is a Hungarian chess grandmaster. Born on March 6, 1960 in Kharkiv, Ukraine, he moved to Hungary in 1976 and is a Hungarian national since then. Alexander bagged the Grandmaster title in 1985. He won several tournaments throughout his career including Reggio Emilia chess tournament in 1988/89 and the Vienna Open in 1990. Chernin also won the Hungarian Chess Championship in 1992 and 1996.
In addition to his playing record, Alexander Chernin worked as a coach, notably for the Hungarian national team. He taught the national team and his students fared remarkably well including Peter Leko who competed for the World Chess Championship in 2004. Other players who were coached by him include Loek Van Wely and Richárd Rapport. He also penned a couple of books during his career.
