Stuart Christopher Conquest is a British chess International Grandmaster. Born on March 1, 1967, he is best recognized for winning the British Championship in 2008 and the Commonwealth Championship in 2011.
Conquest learned to play chess when he was 8 years old, and showed a natural talent for the game. He earned the title of International Master in 1986, the same year he won the World Under-20 championship. He then gained his International Grandmaster title two years later in 1988.
In 1995, Conquest took part in a massive simultaneous chess exhibition in Mexico City where he played with over 10,000 children at once, making it one of the world's largest such events ever.
Apart from his notable championships and participation, he has also contributed to the popularization of chess. He was previously a trustee of the charity, Chess in Schools and Communities (CSC), which promotes the teaching of chess in state schools.
Conquest served as the director of the 2014 and 2015 Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival. He then became the Grandmaster Chess Professional at the Gibraltar Chess Congress in 2014. He also plays for the English team in the 4NCL (The Four Nations Chess League).
Apart from chess, Conquest graduated from the University of Hull, majoring in Spanish and French. He also lived in Spain for several years. His work as a translator includes translating two of Arturo Pérez Reverte's novels into English.
