Jaime Alexander Cuartas is a Colombian chess Grandmaster. Born on February 4, 1979 in Medellín, he achieved the FIDE Master title in 1997 and Grandmaster status in 2008.
Cuartas became Colombian Junior Champion in 1996 and later won the Colombian Championship in 1997 and 1999. He achieved his greatest international success by winning the 1st Bolivarian Games in 2005. He has also participated in six Chess Olympiads between 1996 and 2008.
In 2002, he received the “Sportsman of the Year” award from the city of Medellín, and in 2003 he became the Colombian National Team Champion with the Risaralda Chess Club.
Cuartas shares his passion for chess through education, teaching in several institutions in Colombia and Italy from 1999 to 2015. He served as the Head Coach of the Colombian National Team from 2009 to 2011, and has been the Director of Chess School in Envigado since 2004.
In 2016, he received a recognition medal from the Colombian Chess Federation for his achievements in chess.
