Cvitan represented Yugoslavia in the World Team Chess Championship in 1985, and later played for Croatia in various world and European team competitions. His crowning achievement was arguably when he tied for first place in the World Chess Championship zonal tournament in 1993. He also served as the captain of the Croatian women's team from 2008 to 2012.

A key player in the team competitions, Cvitan garnered team silver at the Novi Sad 1990 Olympiad and individual bronze medals at the Lucerne 1982 and Thessaloniki 1984 Olympiads.
