Rustem Dautov is a Russian-born German chess Grandmaster (GM). He was born on November 28, 1965 in Ufa, Bashkir Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. As a child, he learned chess at age six and was trained by Fayzullah Sagitov.


Dautov's chess career includes several notable accomplishments. In 1985, he won the USSR Youth Championship. He became an International Master in 1986 and a year later, he won the European Junior Chess Championship. He then achieved the highest chess title, Grandmaster, in 1988. Dautov also won the 1991 Munich Summer tournament and was a runner-up in the same tournament a year later.


Dautov's biggest achievement came in 1995 when he played as a leading board for the German team that won silver in the European Team Chess Championship. In 1996, he tied for first place with Norwood at Hastings. Additionally, Dautov participated in four Chess Olympiads, playing for Germany from 1994 to 2000, and helped the team win the 5th European Team Championship in 1999.


Throughout his career, Dautov has competed against several world-class chess players including Viswanathan Anand, Alexei Shirov and Peter Leko. Along with playing, Dautov has also contributed to the world of chess as a trainer. He trained several successful chess players including Arkadij Naiditsch and Elisabeth Pähtz.



Outside of chess, Dautov studied at the Ufa Aviation Institute, from which he graduated in 1987. He relocated to Germany in 1992 and later acquired citizenship in 1996. He currently resides in Freiburg, Germany.
