Sergey Dolmatov is a chess Grandmaster from Russia and a former World Junior Chess Champion. Born on February 20, 1959, he trained at the Tigran Petrosian Chess School in Moscow and quickly made his way up in the ranks of the world's elite players by winning several high-profile tournaments.


Dolmatov began to gain international recognition in 1978, when he captured the World Junior Chess Championship in Norway. He earned the International Master title the same year and turned Grandmaster in 1982.


Some of his significant achievements in tournaments include winning the Moscow Championship in 1990, winning the silver medal at the Manila Interzonal in 1990, and finishing second at the Candidates Tournament in 1991.


Sergey Dolmatov's style of playing is highly regarded for its strategic depth and accurate calculation. He was a top-10 player during his peak years.


Subsequent to his successful career as a chess player, Dolmatov made a shift towards coaching. He is notably identified for coaching the famous Russian grandmaster Alexandra Kosteniuk, who won the Women's World Chess Championship in 2008.


Despite not actively competing in recent years, Sergey Dolmatov remains a respected figure in the chess community for his contributions to the game both as a player and as a coach.
