Dimitar I. Donchev is a Bulgarian chess Grandmaster (1996), chess author and trainer. He was born on 6th July 1958 in Lovech, Bulgaria. Donchev took the Bulgarian championship title in 1986 and won 100 categories in open tournaments. In 1986, he also won an international tournament at Albena and logged a first-place win in Dortmund in 1987. He tied for first in the event from 1988 to 1990.
Beyond his personal accomplishments, Donchev served as a coach. He successfully coached the Bulgarian women's team and two world junior champions. As an author, Donchev wrote primarily in Bulgarian and Russian. He is especially known for his work "Domination in 2,545 Endgame Studies"—a book about chess endings that has been translated into many languages and won a prestigious prize.
On top of his esteemed chess career, Donchev is known for his facetious style and for being a member of the Bulgarian Esperanto Association.
