Vladimir Epishin is a Russian chess Grandmaster and chess coach recognized by the International Chess Federation (FIDE). He was born on 11 July 1965 in Leningrad, Russia. Despite having a career peak rank of 21st in the world in 1991, he never won a major international chess tournament.
Epishin began gaining prominence in the chess world through notable achievements throughout the 1980s and 90s. He won the 1980 USSR Junior Chess Championship and the 1987 Soviet Army Championship. He also became a Grandmaster in 1990.
Epishin's best career performance was at the 1991 Reggio Emilia chess tournament where he tied for first place with Viswanathan Anand. He also represented Russia at the Chess Olympiad in 1992 and 1994, where his team won gold and bronze medals respectively.
After his active professional career, Epishin transitioned to chess coaching. He served as the second to 13th World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov from 1994 to 1996. H
