Sébastien Feller is a French chess player who was awarded the title of Grandmaster by FIDE in 2010. Born in Thionville, France in 1991, Feller began playing chess at age 8 and was coached by Grandmaster Olivier Renet. In 2005, he won the French Youth Chess Championship in the Under 14 category and in 2007 he won the European Youth Chess Championship for players U16.
Internationally, Feller has represented France in the World Youth Chess Championships, scoring 8 points out of 11 in the Under 18 category in 2008. In 2010, Feller won the Paris Championship and represented France again, this time in the 39th Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk in Russia. He won the gold medal on the 5th board.
However, Feller's career was mired in controversy when he was implicated in a cheating scandal at the 2010 Chess Olympiad, where he was accused of using a mobile phone to access computer analytics during games. He was found guilty by the French Chess Federation and received a suspension.
After the early controversy in his career, Feller continues to appear in international tournaments, achieving noteworthy results such as winning the 2015 French Chess Championship and the 2018 Pro-Biz Cup with Romain Edouard. He also participated in the 2020 World Blitz Championship.
Other highlights of his career include achieving a ranking of 26th in the world for Blitz chess in 2019 and beating former World Champion Anatoly Karpov in a simultaneous exhibition game in 2003, when he was just 11 years old.
