Chess Master Biography
Benjamin Finegold is an American chess Grandmaster, noted for his instructional capacities and for being one of the very few Chess Grandmasters who have achieved the title without ever tying for first place in a major competition. Born on September 6, 1969, in Detroit, Michigan, he learned to play chess at the age of 5.
Finegold was awarded the United States Chess Federation (USCF) titles of National Master in 1983, Life Master in 1985, and Senior Master in 1986. In 1994, he earned the title of International Master and later became a Grandmaster in 2010. He has won several state championships in Michigan, Indiana, Georgia, and Missouri.
He has coached junior players and has taught in chess camps, has served as a commentator for elite chess tournaments such as the Sinquefield Cup, and has created a variety of instructional chess videos.
In 2017, Finegold and his wife, Karen Boyd, opened the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Atlanta. They closed this club and opened a new one, the Atlanta Chess Club, in 2020. Finegold and Boyd also host daily online tournaments on the chess platform, lichess.org.
An extraordinary moment in Finegold's career came when he famously drew against former World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand at the 2002 Bermuda Open, despite being significantly outranked.
Finegold is known for his entertaining and accessible teaching style, which balances humor and simplicity to make the game enjoyable and understandable to all skill levels. His teaching style particularly focuses on improving players' understanding of tactics, strategy, openings, middlegame plans, and endgame technique. He is also renowned for making extraordinarily detailed analyses of famous games for his students and followers, such as the game Garry Kasparov vs Deep Blue in 1997.
