Gennadij Fish is an International Chess Grandmaster and a formidable Russian player. Born on October 26, 1960, in Tashkent, USSR, he earned the International Master title in 1984 and was awarded the supreme title of Grandmaster in 1990.
Fish won multiple chess tournaments in his career, including Dortmund and Polanica-Zdrój in 1991, and New Zealand Chess Championship in 1992-93. In 1999, he was victorious at the Asian Championship, receiving a nomination for the FIDE World Chess Championship 2000. He also placed 3rd in the prestigious Russian Championship Superfinal in 2000.
Throughout the 2000s, Fish participated in numerous international tournaments, taking part in World Chess Championships in Las Vegas (1999), New Delhi and Tehran (2000), Moscow (2001, 2002), Tripoli (2004), Argentina (2005), and San Luis (2005). He was also a member of the Russian team won the gold medal at the 32nd Chess Olympiad in Yerevan in 1996.
Fish played for different clubs around the world, namely Russia, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland. He was also the personal coach to the Women's World Chess Champion 2008, Alexandra Kosteniuk, and was awarded the title of FIDE Senior Trainer in 2005.
Fish is known for his defensive style of play and has created several instructional DVDs offering insights into his approach to the game. He has also contributed to various chess publications and served as an author for the chess publisher ChessBase.
