Alexander Fominyh is a Russian chess International Grandmaster (IGM), a FIDE Senior Trainer, and a former administrative member of FIDE. He was born in Chelyabinsk on July 24, 1959, and graduated from the Chelyabinsk Polytechnic Institute.
Fominyh has had multiple significant accomplishments in his chess career. In 1991, he tied for first in the Russian Chess Championship. He was awarded the International Master title in 1984, then the Grandmaster title in 1994. Additionally, he has represented Russia in the Chess Olympiad. Beyond this, Fominyh has also been a successful trainer; some of his top students have included players like Alexandra Kosteniuk and Alisa Galliamova.
From 2002 until 2010, Fominyh held a position within FIDE, the global chess organization, where he worked as an administrator. Specifically, he became a Vice President in 2002 and held that role until 2006. After this, he served as an Executive Director of FIDE until 2010. He also served as the Director of the FIDE Moscow office from 2002 to 2015. Fominyh currently lives in Kazan and continues to contribute to the global chess community.
