Robert Fontaine is a French chess Grandmaster and journalist. He was born on 18 October 1980 in the city of Levallois-Perret, France. Fontaine achieved the title of International Master in 2001 and the esteemed title of Grandmaster in 2002, at the age of 22.
During his chess career, Fontaine won various national and international tournaments. Some of these include the Championship of Paris in 2004, and the 8th Open International Bavarian Championship in 2005. He also regularly participated in Chess Olympiads from 2002 to 2008, representing France.
In 2009, Fontaine began his career as a journalist, working for Europe Echecs – the main chess magazine in France. He then moved on to cover chess for the Norwegian channel NRK during the World Chess Championship 2013 in Chennai and the World Chess Championship 2014 in Sochi.
Later, Robert Fontaine began covering competitive chess and presenting a chess program on the sports channel beIN Sports. He also set up the chess video news site Europe Echecs, where he has interviewed several top players. He has also worked for the Kasparov Chess Foundation in Brussels.
In 2017, Fontaine and his wife started Kaiman Games, a company that creates and promotes games, with a focus on making chess more accessible. Their first project was chess game, Pawn of the Dead.
In his personal life, Fontaine is married to fellow chess player Kateryna Lagno.
