In 2000, Gabrielian finished second in the Russian Junior Chess Championship and then won the Under 18 category in the same competition a year later. He also represented Russia at the Under 16 Chess Olympiad in 1999, winning the silver medal.
Gabrielian won the Russian Chess Championship Higher League in 2009 and came second in the same competition in 2010. He has competed in the Chess World Cup on two occasions, in 2009 and 2011. In the 2009 championship, he defeated several well-known players including Evgeny Tomashevsky and the African champion Ahmed Adly.
Despite his significant prowess in chess, Gabrielian is not a full-time chess professional. He holds a degree in economics and works in the Russian legal system.
