Platon Yakovlevich Galperin was a Ukrainian chess coach and international arbiter. He was born on May 13, 1929 in Kharkov and died on March 25, 2007 in Kirovograd. As a coach, Galperin guided many chess players to the top level of competition, including Grandmasters Anastasiya Karlovich and Sergey Karjakin. His contribution to the development of chess players in Ukraine earned him the recognition of "Honored Coach of Ukraine" as well as the prestigious FIDE Instructor and FIDE Senior Trainer titles.
As an International Arbiter, Galperin officiated at various national, continental, and world championship tournaments. He was also actively involved in the administrative side of chess, holding several positions within the Ukrainian Chess Federation and in the FIDE Training Commission. His educational system for young chess players is considered effective and is recognised in many parts of the world.
Platon Galperin died in 2007, leaving behind a significant legacy in the chess world, particularly in the development and promotion of young talents. He was posthumously awarded the title of "Merited Worker of Physical Culture and Sports of Ukraine". After his death, the city of Kirovohrad started holding an annual chess tournament dedicated to Platon Galperin’s memory.
