Surya Shekhar Ganguly is an Indian chess grandmaster. Born on 24th February 1983 in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, he is a six-time Indian Chess Champion. Ganguly became a chess grandmaster in 2003.
Ganguly has represented India in numerous team events. He won five gold medals at the Chess Olympiad (2000, 2002, 2004, 2008, 2014) as a member of the Indian team. He also won a gold medal at the Asian Team Chess Championships in 2003 and another in 2005 at the World Team Chess Championship.
Ganguly has been the second (assistant) to Viswanathan Anand, the former World Chess Championship record holder, on several occasions. The two worked together during the World Chess Championship in 2008, 2010 and 2012, and Anand attributed some of his success to Ganguly's assistance.
Ganguly also has several individual achievements. His first individual gold came in 2009 at the Asian Chess Championship. He won his second gold in 2011 at the Gros Open and his third in 2013 at the Indonesian Open. In 2019, he won the Belt and Road Hunan Open in China.
Ganguly was awarded the Arjuna Award, a prestigious Indian civilian award, in 2005 for his contributions to chess. Ganguly is also an International Arbiter.
