Camilo Ernesto Gomez Garrido is a Cuban chess grandmaster. Born on January 1, 1962, in Santa Clara, Cuba, Garrido achieved the status of International Master in 1983, then secured his grandmaster title in 1994.
Although Cuban Champion a total of four times, (1984, 1985, 1991, and 1992), Garrido also boasts significant international success. He won the Capablanca Memorial Tournament in 1991, and again in 1994. He performed in several Chess Olympiads, most notably leading the Cuban team to fourth place at the 30th Chess Olympiad in Manila in 1992, and then to their Bronze medal finish at the 31st Chess Olympiad in Moscow in 1994. He was awarded the silver medal for best individual performance on board one, scoring 76.9 percent in the former.
Garrido was a regular player in the international tournament circuit until the mid-1990s. A published author and noted translator of chess books, Garrido presently serves as the chess trainer in Qatar.
