In 1936, he won the Argentine Championship at 23, becoming one of its youngest champions. He repeated this success again in 1941 and 1947. He secured the title of International Master in 1950 and was later honored with the title of Grandmaster in 1960 by FIDE, the international chess federation.

He also played an instrumental role in Argentina's victories in the 1950 and 1953 chess Olympiads, as well as participating in several other international competitions. In 1945, he played for Argentina in a famous radio match against USSR, the then-world chess superpower.

Throughout his career, Guimard mentored other chess players, including the world champion, Robert James Fischer. He was noted for his classical style of play, focusing on positional understanding and endgame skill. After retiring from competitive chess, he played sessions of simultaneous games and provided tutoring in chess up until his death.
