Andrey Gutov is a Russian chess grandmaster, having received his grandmaster title in 2003. He was born in 1971 in Chelyabinsk, situated in Russia. He learned chess at the age of six and rose to prominence in the 1990s, winning the Russian Championship in correspondence chess multiple times.
Notably, Gutov won the World Championship in correspondence chess in 2005-2008 and ten years later, in 2018-2020, he became World Champion in correspondence chess for the second time. He has also published many books and articles about correspondence chess. He's ranked highly in both the international and Russian chess rankings.
Away from the chessboard, Gutov is a doctor of philosophical sciences and has authored a number of articles on philosophy, aesthetics, and art theory. He teaches at the Ural State University in Ekaterinburg and is a member of the Philosophical and Aesthetic Society.
