Edhi Handoko (1960-2009) was an Indonesian chess grandmaster. Born in Jakarta, he held the title of the youngest Indonesian chess master at the age of 16. Notable achievements include winning the Asian Junior Championship in 1979, becoming Grandmaster in 1989, and his four-time victory at the Indonesian Chess Championship in 1977, 1978, 1986, and 1994.
Handoko also participated in several Chess Olympiads, representing Indonesia from 1980 to 1992. Additionally, he competed in numerous international competitions, including the 1989 Zonal Tournament in Jakarta, where he gained the title of International Master. Exceptionally, he defeated the chess legend and Grandmaster Jan Timman in just 30 moves in the Groningen Open Tournament in 1990. His performance in this tournament led the World Chess Federation (FIDE) to confirm his Grandmaster title in 1995.
He also contributed to the popularisation of chess as a sport in Indonesia. After his retirement, he continued to support Indonesian chess as a coach. He was known not only for his achievements but also for his approachable nature and charisma. Handoko passed away due to a heart attack on February 17, 2009.
In October 2014, Handoko's name was commemorated in the "Edhi Handoko Memorial", a chess tournament held by the Indonesian Chess Association. His legacy continues to inspire chess players in Indonesia.
