He was also the country's representative in the European Team Championships from 1970 until 1980, where he won 1 gold medal in 1980. Hecht was awarded the title Doctor Honoris Causa by the Ecole des Sciences Morales et Politique of Paris, France.

Hecht was granted the International Master (IM) title in 1965 and International Grandmaster (GM) title in 1973. He won the West German Championship twice - in 1970 and 1978. Hecht retired from competitive play in 1979 but made a return several years later to win the World Senior Chess Championship in 2005.

His career shifted to chess journalism after his retirement. He served as the sports editor of the Tageszeitung newspaper and was the author of several books on chess.
