Hoffmann participated in several European Team Chess Championships and Chess Olympiads. His greatest successes came in the 1990 Manila and 1992 Manila Chess Olympiads, where he scored 9/12 (+7 =4 -1) and 8.5/12 (+6 =5 -1) respectively. These performances earned him individual gold medals for the third board and reserve board in 1990 and 1992 respectively.
He also competed in the German Chess Championship in 1987, the Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting in 1988 and 1990, and other international tournaments, consistently achieving respectable scores. He returned to the Chess Olympiad in 2008, but for the British Virgin Islands rather than Germany.
While he had a promising start to his career, his progress slowed down and he eventually stopped competing in tournaments after 2013. His last recorded tournament was Bundesliga 2012/13, where he scored 4/9 (-1 =6 -2). Despite his relative withdrawal from the chess scene, his name continues to hold considerable respect within the chess community.
