József Horváth is a Hungarian chess Grandmaster who was born on January 28, 1964, in Pécs, Hungary. He was awarded the title of Grandmaster by FIDE (the International Chess Federation) in 1988.
Horváth has competed in several Hungarian Chess Championships since 1983, taking home first place in 2003. He was also a member of the Hungarian national team in seven Chess Olympiads, and in 1997 and 2001, two European Team Chess Championships.
In 2008, Horváth won the first Caissa GM tournament in Kecskemét.
When it comes to the junior category, Horváth's record shows he was the Boys' Under-16 category of the World Junior Chess Champion in Dortmund 1980. He also claimed gold as the best Boys' Under-14 player in the European Junior Chess Championship in Groningen 1978.
In the 1984 Wijk aan Zee International tournament, he won the 3rd best new player award, which demonstrates early promise in his career.
His notable contribution to the game is that he is associated with creating the Budapest Gambit, a chess opening, which got its name from the city in Hungary.
