Péter Horváth is a Hungarian chess grandmaster. Born on February 26, 1962, Horváth became an International Master in 1988 and then a grandmaster in 1990. He started making significant strides in his chess career in the mid-1980s. By 1986, he won his first Hungarian Championships. The championships were just the first of his seven total wins.
He claimed victory in many chess competitions in Hungary and beyond. He won Szolnok in 1985, Zalaegerszeg in 1987, Dortmund in 1988, and Kecskemét in 1989. He also participated and won the Marx Gyorgy Memorial in Paks in 1991. Horváth's best performance came in 1990 when he managed to be part of the group who represented Hungary in the Novi Sad Chess Olympiad. In 1992, he joined the Hungarian team in Manila and won the silver medal.
Beyond his chess playing career, Horváth has also contributed to chess as an organizer and coach. He was the main organizer of the First Saturday Budapest, a series of chess tournaments which aim to provide opportunities for young and upcoming chess players to earn FIDE titles.
