Ashwin Jayaram is an Indian chess player who holds the title of Grandmaster (GM), the highest title a chess player can attain. He was born on December 21, 1989, in Tamil Nadu, India. Jayaram became a Grandmaster in 2011, following him winning the Parsvnath Commonwealth Championship in 2010.
Early in his career, Ashwin Jayaram won the Under-12 Asian and World Youth chess championships in 2001. He then won the Under-14 section at the 2003 Commonwealth Chess Championship. In 2004, Jayaram achieved the FIDE Master (FM) rank. He utilized the Kramnik Variation to reach a draw with Vladimir Kramnik who was then the world champion.
In 2008, he earned his International Master (IM) title, and he acquired his GM title three years later in 2011. The same year, he won the 12th Dubai Open Chess Championship. Jayaram has since grown to become one of India's most celebrated chess players.
Besides his career as a chess player, Ashwin studied physics at Saint Louis University. He then completed his Master's in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Dallas, where he was part of the chess team.
