Artur Mayakovich Jussupow is a Russian-German chess Grandmaster and chess author. Born on February 13, 1960, in Moscow, Russia, he established his reputation in the chess world as a leading player and wrote numerous books on chess strategy.

Jussupow was trained at the Tigran Petrosian Chess School and emerged to the top-tier chess scene when he had won the World Junior Chess Championship in 1977. He was awarded the International Master title in 1978 and the International Grandmaster title in 1980. His highest-ranking was third in the world, which he achieved in 1986.

He began his illustrious career in World Championship matches in 1983, when he reached the semi-final, before repeating the feat in both 1986 and 1990. Unfortunately, he was unable to claim the world championship as he succumbed each time to his opponents.

In 1993, Jussupow, who is also a law graduate, had survived an assassination attempt by a hired robber. This incident had forced him to move to Germany, where he settled permanently. He turned to training and writing chess literature after moving to Germany. He established a chess academy with Mark Dvoretsky and coached several young players, including World Champion Viswanathan Anand.

Artur Jussupow also co-authored a series of renowned chess books, known as ‘The Course’. It is a comprehensive series developed to help club and amateur players progress to master strength. Jussupow has received high acclaim for The Course which has further enriched his legacy as an important figure in the chess world. Despite his significant achievements, he remains active in the chess scene and continues to participate in international tournaments.

As a tribute to his extensive contributions to chess, in 2015, he was awarded the title of FIDE Senior Trainer - one of the highest-ranking titles awarded by the International Chess Federation.
