Bazar Khatanbaatar (b. March 19, 1973) is a Mongolian chess player who holds the FIDE title of Grandmaster (GM).
Born in Zavkhan Province, Mongolia, Khatanbaatar began playing chess at a very early age. He won multiple youth championships throughout Mongolia and Asia. His first major breakthrough came at the 1993 Mongolian Chess Championship, where he clinched first place.
In 1994, he won the Asian Junior Chess Championship, becoming the Mongolian junior champion, which qualified him for the International Master (IM) title. He also made his debut for the national team in the same year at the Chess Olympiad in Moscow. In 1996, he was awarded the Grandmaster (GM) title by FIDE after winning the Zonal tournament of the World Chess Championship in Cebu, making him the first Mongolian chess player to achieve this title.
Khatanbaatar represented his country at the Chess Olympiads eight times between 1994 and 2006, and also participated in the World Team Chess Championships in 1993 and 1997.
Aside from his chess career, Khatanbaatar has also worked as a coach for his national chess teams. He is fluent in three languages: Mongolian, Russian and English.
