Daniel J. King (born 28 August 1963) is an English chess grandmaster, coach, author and broadcaster. Born in Beckenham, London, he achieved International Master status in 1982 and the grandmaster title in 1989. King has a degree in English from the University of Bristol and also earned an MA on English Literature from the University of London.
He has coached some of the UK’s top junior players since the late 1980s and has worked with several notable British players such as Matthew Sadler and David Howell.
In addition to his coaching, King has authored several books on chess, including "How Good Is Your Chess?", "Sicilian Defence" and "Winning with the Najdorf". He has also recorded many chess DVDs, including Power Play Chess Series, The Colle System, and The English Opening.
King has featured as a chess commentator on television and radio, notably during the BBC's coverage of the World Chess Championships. His online activities include a YouTube channel, PowerPlayChess, where he posts game analysis and chess puzzles. King also contributes to Chessbase's online platform and has worked as a commentator for international tournaments on various chess channels on the internet.
King has received recognition for his work, and was shortlisted for the English Chess Federation's Book of the Year award in 2009, and for their 'Chess Writer of the Year' award in 2003.
