Alexander Zakharovich Konstantinopolsky (19 February 1910 – 21 May 1990) was a well-known chess player, coach, and journalist from the Soviet Union. He was known for his wide record of achievements and contributions in the world of chess.


Konstantinopolsky started to play chess when he was twenty years old and became one of the most respected Soviet players. He gained the International Master title in 1950 and the full Grandmaster title in 1956. Among his distinguished titles are the Moscow Championship twice and the 1945 USSR championship. Moreover, he ended third in the Chess championship of the USSR in 1936.


As a tournament player, Konstantinopolsky actively participated in various competitions throughout Europe from 1936 up to the 1980s. Notable events include the Mar del Plata tournament in 1955 where he tied for second place with grandmaster David Bronstein after Grandmaster Isaac Boleslavsky.


Konstantinopolsky held different roles in the international chess scene. He was a chess official, coach, teacher and writer. He worked as an arbiter in numerous World Chess Championships—a match between Fischer and Spassky in 1972 among others.


As a coach, Konstantinopolsky dedicated a large part of his life guiding young chess talents. He trained generations of famous chess players, including grandmaster Anatoly Karpov, the World Chess Champion from 1975 to 1985. His contributions to the development of the chess game can also be found in his numerous works related to the game which include books and articles.


Konstantinopolsky died on 21st May 1990 in Moscow. He made a significant impact on the world of chess both as a player and a coach, his contributions to the development of the game had a global influence and remain until the present time.
