Anthony C. Kosten is a French-British chess grandmaster and author of several notable chess books. Born in London on January 24, 1958, Kosten represented England in many international events, after achieving his International Master title in 1982 and grandmaster title in 1989. He has participated in nine Chess Olympiads, mainly representing England but later became a naturalized French citizen in 2004 and played for France thereafter. He earned notable victories against several top-level players, including world champions Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov.
He achieved his peak world ranking of 101 in 1990. Several of his notable tournament successes include winning third place in British Chess Championships and finishing joint first at the 2001/2 Hasting Premier.
In addition to his playing career, Kosten is known for his work as a chess author. His books, widely appreciated in the chess community, are primarily opening manuals focusing on less explored opening strategies; they include "The Dynamic English", "The Latvian Gambit", "Easy guide to the Najdorf" among others.
Currently, he serves as a chess coach, his most notable students include grandmasters Paco Vallejo and Sophie Milliet.
