David Lariño Nieto is a Spanish chess Grandmaster. He was born on February 17, 1989 in Ferrol, a city in the Province of A Coruña, Galicia, Spain. While still very young, he made a name for himself in chess.
Nieto bagged the Galician Championship four times: U-10 (in 1998), U-12 (in 2000), U-14 (in 2002), and U-18 (in 2007). In 2009, he won the Spanish Junior Championship, subsequently becoming a Grandmaster (GM) in 2010, a chess title bestowed by the World Chess Federation or FIDE. He obtained this achievement after fulfilling the necessary norms in diverse tournaments in Mondariz, Sort, and Barcelona, Spain.
Nieto holds the impressive record of playing against 1408 simultaneous chess players over 24 hours in August 2012. He achieved another amazing feat in 2018 when he played blitz games against 254 players continuously without any breaks. He also participated in other international tournaments, such as the Llucmajor Open in the same year, finishing second.
In 2013, he was invited to compete in the European Chess Championship. Moreover, in the Gibraltar Open of 2014, he won the 1st Best Game Prize. He took part in multiple competitions in his career, representing Spain.
Outside his professional life, Nieto earned a degree in Physical Activity and Sports Science from University of A Coruña. In addition, he enjoys playing the piano and guitar, exercising, and learning languages. He is involved in teaching and promoting chess in his home region, Galicia.
