Heinz Lehmann is a German chess International Grandmaster. He was born on February 8, 1934 in Assmannshausen, from a wine-growing family. Initially, his parents were against his decision to play chess but later became supportive when he started achieving success in the game.

Lehmann took part in numerous Diagonale Chess Championships in his initial years. At the age of 19, he was awarded the title of National Master after winning over Lothar Schmid in Augsburg. By September 1953, he had made a name for himself nationally and internationally.

Lehmann represented West Germany in various international team events including the European Team Chess Championships and the Chess Olympiads, and contributed significantly to the team's success. In 1961, he also participated in the famous Zonal Tournament in Enschede, where he achieved 7th place.

His excellent performances in these tournaments led to the Federation Internationale des Echecs (FIDE) awarding him the title of an International Master in 1961. His biggest career success came in 1972 when he was awarded the highest title, International Grandmaster, after his exceptional performance in the Siegen Chess Olympiad.

Lehmann has written about his experiences in chess and in 2018, published his book "Ein Leben für das Schach" (A Life for Chess). His most notable work, however, is the establishment of a youth training program at home and abroad - a significant contribution to the development of German chess.

At present, Lehmann is not active in tournament chess. His last tournament was in 2014 when he finished third in the German Senior's Championship.
