Darcy Gustavo Machado Vieira Lima, known as Darcy Lima, is a Brazilian chess grandmaster, international arbiter, author, and prominent member of the Brazilian chess community. He was born on February 4, 1962 in Itaguai, Brazil. His career professional highlights include achieving grandmaster status in 1998, winning the Brazilian Chess Championship in 1989, and representing Brazil in 13 Chess Olympiads from 1982 to 2014. He also served as Vice President of the Brazilian Chess Confederation from 1990 to 1992, and has served as the International Chess Federation's (FIDE) Vice President since 2014.
Apart from his professional chess career, Darcy Lima is also a medical doctor specializing in radiology, and has authored books on chess, medicine, and literature. These include a book about Brazilian chess players in 1998, an instructional chess book in 2001, and a medical publication on osteoporosis in 1998. He is multi-lingual and fluent in Portuguese, English, Italian, Spanish and French. Lima is also known for advocating the inclusion of chess in education.
His personal life includes his wife and two sons, one of whom is an International Master in chess, Rafael Vinicius Bezerra de Lima, and he lives in São Paulo.
