Smbat Gariginovich Lputian is an Armenian chess Grandmaster. He was born on February 14, 1958 in Yerevan, Armenia. Lputian first gained international recognition in chess when he won the World Junior Chess Championship in 1976. He was awarded the International Master (IM) title in 1977 and the Grandmaster (GM) title in 1984.
Throughout his career, Lputian has achieved several notable successes, including winning the Armenian Chess Championship in 1978, 1981 and 1982. He has competed in the Chess World Cup, where he reached the quarterfinals in 2005.
In team competitions, Lputian has represented Armenia in the Chess Olympiad and the European Team Chess Championships. His notable achievements in these competitions include winning two team bronze medals and two individual bronze medals at the Chess Olympiad, and winning a team silver medal at the European Team Chess Championships.
Apart from playing, Lputian has also made significant contributions to chess in Armenia. He founded the Chess Academy of Armenia in 2002 and served as its director. He has also been involved in the organization of the annual Karen Asrian Memorial tournament.
In 2010, Lputian became the President of the Armenian Chess Federation. He also served as the Vice President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and was a member of the FIDE Trainers' Commission.
The title of "Honoured Master of Sport of the USSR" was awarded to him in 1986. Furthermore, he was awarded the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland" in Armenia. He was included in the FIDE Golden book for his contributions to chess.
