Elmar Magerramov is an Azerbaijani chess Grandmaster. He was awarded the International Master (IM) title in 1982 and the Grandmaster (GM) title in 1992. Among his notable performances are winning the USSR Junior Championship in 1981 and the Azerbaijan Championship in 1982 and 1985.
In international competitions, he has achieved impressive results. He won a strong open tournament in Beirut in 1995, and later in 1999, he shared first place in the United Arab Emirates Championship. In addition, during the Chess Olympiads, representing different countries, he accumulated 9 wins, 13 draws, and only 3 losses in the 1990s.
In his early career, Magerramov also notably helped the young prodigy Garry Kasparov with training and analysis. He shared first with Kasparov at Baku in 1977 and taught Kasparov how to execute the Caro–Kann Defence effectively.
