Vladimir Andreevich Makogonov was a Soviet chess player and trainer known for his contributions to the King's Indian Defence and the Caro–Kann Defence. Born in Nakhchivan in the Russian Empire on 27 August 1904, he became a prominent chess grandmaster and held titles such as Azerbaijan Champion and Armenia Champion.

Makogonov's best international result was at Moscow 1947, where he tied for 3rd-4th place and became a permanent member of the USSR's top ten team. Despite his achievements, he didn't participate in many international tournaments because of his profession as an engineer and later, due to World War II.

As a trainer, Makogonov helped grandmasters like Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparov in their early years. He made significant contributions to the development of the King's Indian Defence and Caro–Kann Defence.

He initially played in the hypermodern style but later switched to the classical style. His brother, Mikhail Makogonov, was also a skilled chess player. Vladimir Makogonov died on 31 January 1993 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
