Vladimir Malakhov is a Russian chess Grandmaster and scientist. He was born on November 27, 1980, in Sverdlovsk.
Malakhov is known for his successful chess career, during which he has won several major tournaments, and for his striking ability to equally incorporate tactical and positional play. He achieved the GM title when he was only 19.
Significant achievements in Malakhov's chess career include his shared first place in the Russian Championship in 2003 and winning the 2009 edition of EU Individual Open Championship held in Liverpool. He also represented Russia in several chess Olympiads. In 2010, he reached the top 10 of the world chess rankings.
Alongside his chess career, Malakhov also pursues a career as a physicist. Remarkably, he works as a full-time nuclear physicist at Russia’s State Atomic Energy Corporation, ROSATOM. He stands out in his ability to excel in both areas.
Malakhov follows a slower style of play as compared to other grandmasters. His eventual goal is to reveal a position’s truth, rather than obtaining immediate results.
He is married with two children. In his free time, he enjoys reading detective fiction and is interested in the stock market. He also likes to play football and basketball.
