Vasily Borisovich Malinin is a chess Grandmaster from Russia known for his deep strategic plays. He was born on December 30, 1956, in Omsk, Berkshire, Moscow, Russia. Growing up, he was taught chess by his older brother, and he continued to develop his skills at the Novosibirsk Chess College.

Malinin's first breakthrough came in 1983 when he won the semi-final of the USSR Championship. He continued to participate in several tournaments in the 1980s and 1990s, showing his prowess in strategic thinking and endgame technique. Some of his popular performances include wins against top players like Vitaly Tseshkovsky and Alexej Fedorowicz.

Malinin officially became a Grandmaster in 1989 and was noted for his imaginative and original style of play. He is also credited for his genius tactics in numerous games. Many of his endgames have become textbook examples, particularly his game against Sergey Dolmatov in 1983.
