Dražen Marović is a Croatian chess player, writer, theoretician, and notable chess grandmaster. Born on January 31, 1938 in Split, Yugoslavia (present-day Croatia), he is renowned for his expertise in the field of chess opening and strategy and has carved a remarkable career as an author.
Marović's early successes occurred at national level, leading him to represent Yugoslavia in team competitions. His breakthrough at the international level came in 1967 when he won in Venice. He was awarded the International Master (IM) title the same year. In 1975, he achieved the level of Grandmaster (GM).
Marović has left a significant mark as a chess author. He flourished in the writing career after retiring from competitive play around 1980. He authored many books about various chess strategies including openings, pawn structures, and positional play. His contributions made him one of the premier authorities on various types of pawn structures and their impacts on positional play.
Marović was also a regular contributor to 'Chess Informant', a prestigious and widely-known chess publication. He held the role of its editor for a period of time. As a trainer, he held the post of national coach for both Yugoslavia and Croatia. His writings and teachings have influenced a generation of upcoming players. Despite being a non-agnostic, he is affiliated with the Christians of Croatia.
