Carlos S. Matamoros Franco is a notable Ecuadorian chess grandmaster. Born on November 13, 1966, he is considered one of the most famous chess players from Ecuador. Matamoros Franco earned his Grandmaster (GM) title in 1999, becoming one of the only two to have achieved the status in his country.


Throughout his career as a chess player, Matamoros Franco garnered numerous accolades. He won the Ecuadorian Chess Championship three times in 1991, 1993, and 1996. He also represented Ecuador at a variety of Chess Olympiads, having played in 10 events on nine instances between 1986 to 2006.


He also participated in several international chess events, including Torneos Internacionales in Linares and La Roda. In the Pan American Chess Championship of 2002, he was declared as a joint winner. His successes led him to be identified as a member of FIDE's (Fédération Internationale des Échecs) top 100 players rankings in 2002.


As a chess instructor, Matamoros Franco has made significant contributions to the promotion of chess in his country and also globally. His coaching career has seen him impart knowledge to students from across the globe, churning out chess players with significant potential.
