Aleksandar Matanović is a Serbian Grandmaster of chess, and is internationally recognized for launching the Chess Informant, a periodical dedicated to the game. Born in Belgrade on May 23, 1930, Matanović was awarded the International Master title in 1955, and the Grandmaster title in 1965.


Matanović's chess career spans several decades, from the 1950s to the 1970s. During that time, he won the national Yugoslav Championship three times, in 1962, 1969, and 1978. He also represented Yugoslavia in nine Chess Olympiads between 1957 and 1974, winning several team and individual medals.


In terms of international competition, Matanović competed in 11 zonal tournaments, six interzonal tournaments, and several international tournaments, winning top honors in a number of them.


In 1966, Matanović founded the Chess Informant, an influential chess periodical published in multiple languages. The publication brought together annotated games, combinations, endgames, problems and studies from chess events around the world, and enabled players from different countries to access high-quality information about the state of the game.


Matanović later served as the editor of Chess Informant until 2014. He also became a member of the World Chess Federation's (FIDE) Central Committee, and held various administrative roles in the organization.


Matanović is also the author of several chess books, and his work has greatly contributed to the development of contemporary chess literature. Even today, his periodical, the Chess Informant, remains highly respected within the chess community.
