Adrian Mikhalchishin, a Ukrainian/Slovenian chess Grandmaster (GM), was born on November 18, 1954. He has represented three different countries: the Soviet Union (till 1991), Ukraine (1992-2002), and Slovenia (since 2002). He is a well-known chess coach who trained prominent players like Maya Chiburdanidze, Alisa Galliamova, Nana Alexandria, and Natalia Zhukova. He has also served as the chairman of the FIDE Trainers' Commission.


He achieved his GM title in 1978 and has played in multiple international competitions. Mikhalchishin has twice won the gold and once the bronze medal in World Chess Olympiads as part of the Ukrainian team. He also won the silver medal at the European Team Chess Championship in 1983. His peak FIDE ranking was 18th in the world, which he achieved in 1982.


In addition to his achievements as a player, Mikhalchishin is considered one of the most respected chess trainers globally. Besides coaching individual players, he has also trained teams from Slovenia, the Netherlands and Turkey. He has even worked as a coach at the famous Anatoly Karpov Chess School.


Mikhalchishin's contributions to chess theory are also significant. He's developed the Sveshnikov Variation and the 7.Nf3/8.h3 Anti-Marshall systems. He has written various books on chess and frequently provides commentary at chess events. He also often presents on ChessBase, where he discusses invaluable insights into chess strategy and tactics.
