Gombosuren Munkhgal (born 25 May 1936 – passed away 18 March 2006) was a Mongolian chess player who was awarded the title International Grandmaster for Correspondence Chess (GMCC) from the International Correspondence Chess Federation (ICCF). He was born in Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia and began his chess career playing in regional tournaments in the early 1950s. He became a renowned Mongolian chess player, known for representing Mongolia in seven Chess Olympiads and winning over numerous notable international players.


Gombosuren's notable career successes include winning the USSR Championship semi-final in 1963, the All-Russian Correspondence Championship in 1965, and the Championship of Mongolia in 1967. He also shared first place in the World Correspondence Chess Championship semi-final in 1975, which led to him being awarded the International Correspondence Chess Grandmaster (ICCGM) title.


Gombosuren's contributions extended beyond his personal achievements in chess. He actively promoted the game within Mongolia and played an instrumental role in the country's chess development. As a coach, he nurtured multiple young talents who went on to become International Masters of Chess.


After retiring from active play in the late 1980s, Gombosuren continued to contribute to the chess community as a prominent chess journalist and editor. He wrote many articles and books, including a famous textbook on chess in Mongolian. He served as the Chief Editor of "Chess," the most popular chess magazine in Mongolia.


He died in 2006, leaving a significant legacy in Mongolian chess.
