David R. Norwood is a British Grandmaster of chess who was born on October 3, 1968. He won the British under-21 championship in 1985 and turned professional in 1988 when he was awarded the title of International Master. In 1989, he gained the Grandmaster title, becoming the world's youngest grandmaster at that time.

He largely left competitive chess in 1994 to focus on his business career, establishing an asset management company, Fline AG, and becoming a successful investor in technology companies. However, he has remained involved in the chess world as a writer. Norwood authored several books about chess, had a popular chess column in a British newspaper, and has commentated on chess games for the BBC.

Norwood graduated from Keble College, Oxford with a degree in Modern Languages. He has served on the selection committee of the English Chess Federation and played on English teams in four Chess Olympiads. Additionally, he represented Monaco in the European Team Chess Championships.

Norwood's style of play is characterized by unorthodox openings, leading him to be considered a maverick in the chess world. His work helped popularise many previously obscure chess lines and his aggressive, imaginative style is captured in his games. In 2000, he published a collection of these games in a book titled "Winning with Unorthodox Openings".
