Semyon Palatnik is a Ukrainian chess Grandmaster and trainer, born in Odessa on March 6, 1950. He was taught chess by his father, who is also an accomplished raftsman and table tennis player.

Palatnik began his formal training in chess at the age of 12, quickly progressing to the Odessa Young Pioneer Palace, where he trained with future International Master Lev Tsukernik. He consistently won championships at various age categories, gaining some recognition in the chess community.

In 1976 and 1978, Palatnik was awarded the title of International Master and Grandmaster respectively. He is a two-time Ukrainian Chess Champion, winning the titles in 1978 and 1981, and a two-time Moscow Chess Championship silver medalist, following his move from Kiev.

Beyond his personal achievements, Palatnik also contributed significantly to the world of chess through his work as a trainer. In 1983, he graduated from the Higher Coaching School in Moscow with a degree in physical culture. He also worked with the USSR national team.

His training experience spans over four decades, during which he coached numerous renowned players including Fabiano Caruana, Alejandro Ramirez, Varuzhan Akobian, and Bartlomiej Macieja. His notable students include prodigies Anna Muzychuk and Maria Muzychuk.

Palatnik emigrated from Kiev to the United States with his wife, Anna, in 1990, where he currently resides in Saint Louis, Missouri. He continues to be actively involved in chess, both as a player and trainer. He also contributes to chess literature and has written several books.
