In 1936, he won the first tournament of Hungarian Grandmasters. Pap also represented Hungary in several Chess Olympiads. His team took first place at the 4th unofficial Olympiad in Munich (1936), where he also won the individual gold medal on the fourth board.

After World War II, Pap lived in Sweden for several years, where he won the Nordic Chess Championship in 1954. After moving back to Hungary, Pap won the Seniors' World Chess Championship in 1968. He was also an International Arbiter. He was awarded the International Grandmaster title in 1980, six years after his death, becoming the oldest person to receive this title. His grave is located in Budapest’s Farkasréti Cemetery.
