Gábor Papp is a Hungarian chess grandmaster. He was born on July 19, 1987, in Budapest, Hungary. He won the Hungarian Chess Championship in 2013 and earned the title of grandmaster in 2010. Papp has had several notable achievements in his career, aside from becoming the Hungarian champion. In 2009, he took part in the Corus Chess Tournament and in 2018, he helped the Hungarian national team to secure a silver medal in the 43rd Chess Olympiad. He also won the French Team Championship with Clichy twice, in 2015 and 2016. He has been declared as the European Fischer Random Champion twice, in 2019 and 2021.
In 2020, Papp achieved a score of 7.5/9 points in the online rapid chess tournament of the European Fischer Random Championship. For his performance in this event, he was awarded the title of "best player" and represented the European team in the online tournament against America. His "Papp Gambit" has become a notable development in chess openings, with the concept centering around exchanging a knight for two pawns at a very early stage of the game.
Papp's rapid and blitz chess ratings are in the 2600s, which are classified as world-class level scores. These high ratings mostly stem from his performances in the European Fischer Random Championships and the Chess Olympiad event.
