Valerij Popov (born September 10, 1974) is a Russian chess Grandmaster and FIDE trainer. He was awarded the FIDE Master title in 1989 and International Master in 1991. In 1998, he was conferred Grandmaster title by the World Chess Federation. In 2005, he won the International Chess Tournament in Montreal while in 2013, he won the Vladimir Open tournament. In 2015, he came first in the Anatoly Lein Memorial tournament in Cleveland. In 2017, he won the Paul Keres Memorial Tournament in Tallinn.
Popov has also been active as a chess coach. In 2005, he was the coach of FIDE World Champion Rustam Kasimdzhanov, and since 2015 he has been working as a coach for the Russian youth team. He is also the author of several chess books.
