Vladimir Potkin is a Russian chess player who became an International Master in 1998 and was awarded the title of a Grandmaster in 2002. He was born on 26 June 1982 in Moscow. He is known for his remarkable achievements in both playing and coaching chess.
As a chess player, Potkin has won several competitions. In 2006, he won the 7th Railya Karpov Tournament, and the same year, he also won the 1st World University Chess Championship. In 2005, Potkin shared first at the Moscow open. The pinnacle of his chess career was when he triumphed in the 2011 European Individual Chess Championship.
Aside from playing, Potkin is also respected for his work in chess coaching. He has coached several chess prodigies such as Daniil Dubov and Ian Nepomniachtchi. He was the second for Levon Aronian in the World Chess Championship 2013. As a team coach, he coached the Russian national chess team to victory in the World Team Chess Championship of 2009 and 2010.
Portraying his exceptional coaching skills, Potkin was part of the team of coaches sent by Russia for the 2018 Chess Olympiad, where the Russian women's team claimed victory. He also helped Russia in securing a win in the 2019 World Team Chess Championship.
