Sandro Pozo Vera is a Cuban chess player who earned the title of Grandmaster in 2008. Prior to this, he was also an International Master, a title he achieved in 2001. Born on August 25, 1982 in Santa Clara, Villa Clara, Cuba, Pozo Vera learned to play chess at a young age and has been sharpening his skills ever since.
Traditionally, Pozo Vera has excelled in national competitions. He became the Cuban Junior Champion in the U-20 category in both 2002 and 2003. He also performed well in the Capablanca Memorial Tournament in 2008 and 2009.
His performance in international tournaments is also quite impressive. He was champion of the Pula Open in Croatia (2007) and the winner of the 2006 American Continental Chess Championship in Cali, Columbia. He won the bronze medal in the World Junior Chess Championship (U-20 category) in 2002 in Goa, India.
While predominantly known for his chess exploits, Pozo Vera is also a doctor and he's a graduate in medicine from the Instituto Superior de Ciencias Médicas de Villa Clara in Cuba.
